Whether you know them as Gypsy Cobs, Romany Cobs, Colored Cobs, Irish Cobs or Irish Tinkers, this sturdy, gentle breed will capture your heart.
Typically 14-15.2H, the Gypsy Horse is a powerful and compact draft horse, bred to pull the caravans and wagons of Gypsy Romany families in Europe.
The horse breeds utilized for the foundation of this breed - Clydesdale, Shire, Friesian and Dales Pony - each contribute to the standard.
The Gypsy horse is medium to heavy boned, well proportioned with a short back, balanced with ample muscle and abundant feather starting at the knee in the front and hock in the rear. A thick, flowing - often double - mane and luxuriant tail reaching to the ground are desirable. Colors vary, with the most common being black and white.
Prized for their intelligence, stamina and gentle nature, the Gypsy Horse is gaining in popularity in the United States, with registries established to aid in informed breeding. With fewer than 3,000 believed to be in the United States, you may not be familiar with the breed, but once exposed, you're captivated.
